Two days: sealed icons then Wangi country

Two days from Batchelor or a booked park camp

Best for: Seeing Florence and Wangi without a 14-hour Darwin day

Day 1 sealed icons (termite mounds, Florence, Buley) and overnight in Batchelor or an official park camp. Day 2 Wangi Falls plus Greenant Creek, or Cascades / Walker Creek if you want quieter water.

This is the default “we have two days near Litchfield” plan. Each waterfall precinct gets a cool morning. You do not need a 4WD or Tabletop to have a real trip.

Overnight is Batchelor (primary gateway, about 15–20 minutes to the entrance) or a park camp booked on parkbookings.nt.gov.au only — Florence or Wangi Category A are the usual sealed-road nights. There is no pay-on-arrival.

What goes wrong is sneaking Wangi after Day 1 “to see if we like it.” You will like it less at 38 °C on Litchfield Park Road. Lost City still waits for a different, dry-season 4WD day.

Verify swim status, park-open and roads each morning. Day 2 can become a lookout-only morning if the pool is closed — that still counts.

Track status, swimming signs, fees and road closures change — verify on NT Parks and roadreport before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning outline only. A Visitor Pass is not a swim permit.

Timeline

  1. Night before Day 1

Two maps, one pass, one camp or motel

Visitor Pass if required. Book the park camp now if that is the plan — Florence 2WD/4WD Category A or Wangi Category A (caravan, showers). Or book Batchelor. Screenshot maps while you have Wi-Fi. Pack swimwear only as a maybe. Agree: Day 1 = mounds + Florence + Buley. Day 2 = Wangi + one extra, not Lost City.

  2. Day 1 morning

    Sealed icons

Same shape as the one-day sealed plan: early magnetic termite mounds, Florence lookout and stairs or Shady Creek, swim if signed open, then Buley (creek walk or drive). Fill bottles whenever you can. Ask what is closed. No fuel in the park — you already fuelled in Batchelor.

  3. Day 1 afternoon

    Recover at camp or Batchelor

Display the camping tag if you hold one. Boil water. Shade, fluids, early night. Do not add a sunset Wangi drive “to see if we like it.” Charge devices. Check BOM Darwin and park-open for tomorrow. Campground hosts are often at Florence and Wangi in peak May–September.

  4. Night before Day 2

    Park-open, swim signs, energy vote

Check park-open and BOM Darwin again on whatever signal you have. Vote out loud: Wangi loop plus signed-open swim, or lookout-only. Do not add Lost City because Day 1 felt easy. Screenshot the Wangi page. Pack 3 L+ again — yesterday’s bottles do not refill themselves.

  5. Day 2 morning

    Wangi Falls Loop

Read swim signs before anyone changes. Walk the published ~1.6 km Grade 3 loop if open (steep sections; repairs may force an out-and-back — [VERIFY]). Swim only where signed. A seasonal café/kiosk is often mentioned — [VERIFY]; it is not a packing plan. Wangi fence upgrades after detections are management, not a forever-open stamp.

  6. Day 2 late morning

    Greenant, or Cascades / Walker

If energy remains: Greenant Creek toward Tjaetaba lookout. If you want quieter water instead: Cascades (Upper/Lower) or Walker Creek (shady pools; Walker camping is walk-in Category B, booked separately). Carry water. Swim only if signed open. Do not invent a third waterfall after that.

  7. Day 2 afternoon

    Back to Batchelor or Darwin

Leave before heat and tiredness catch up. Darwin is still 90–120 minutes from the icons — do not leave Wangi at 4 pm and expect an easy flight. Fuel in Batchelor on the way out.

Parking & access tips

  • Two different car parks on two different mornings. Screenshot both maps in Batchelor or Darwin.
  • Phone signal is officially limited — download offline maps in town.
  • Wangi day-use fills in the dry — arrive early.
  • Walker Creek is walk-in camping, not a drive-up overflow for Wangi.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Lost City and Reynolds Track
  • Tabletop Track
  • Same-day Florence + Wangi + a Darwin flight
  • A third “quick lookout” after Walker on the way to Darwin
  • Sneaking Wangi after Day 1 “to see if we like it”
  • Any walk that starts after the heat has already built

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Visitors who can spare two mornings
  • People who want Florence and Wangi without a 14-hour day
  • Families who can do one honest waterfall precinct per day

Official overnight only

  • Park camps: parkbookings.nt.gov.au before arrival. Category A at Florence (2WD + 4WD areas) and Wangi (caravan, showers). Walker Creek is walk-in Category B.
  • No on-site payment. Display the tag. Boil water. Fires in designated pits only.
  • Batchelor motel nights are simpler for mixed groups. A town bed is not a camp site.

Decision gates

  • If Day 1 already emptied the tank: Day 2 can be Wangi lookout only
  • If swim signs are closed: you still had a falls morning — do not invent a swim
  • If roads fail: cancel the sector, do not invent a back way
  • If someone is already heat-sick at breakfast: shade and a café, not Greenant stairs

What success looks like

  • Florence and Wangi each got a cool morning — not one smashed afternoon.
  • The overnight was a booked camp or a Batchelor bed, not a walk-up lawn.
  • Lost City still waits for a different, dry-season 4WD day.

  • Florence Falls via Shady CreekThe signature Florence day walk: a 1 km monsoon-forest and woodland path along Shady Creek as the kinder way to the plunge pool. The short path is 160 stairs. Combine with the lookout, a signed-open swim, then Florence Creek Walk to Buley if energy and parking allow.
  • Wangi Falls LoopSignature short loop from the Wangi plunge pool through monsoon forest, a viewing platform at the base, then stairs to escarpment views above the falls. Pair with the park’s most accessible swim when signed open. Seasonal café [VERIFY]. Closures after rain or crocodile detections are normal, not rare.
  • Greenant Creek to Tjaetaba LookoutShady Grade 3 walk from the Greenant Creek picnic area up to Tjaetaba Falls lookout. The plunge pool and downstream area is a sacred site — do not swim there. The tiny pool above the falls is not a signed swimming hole. No camping. Pair with Wangi, not with a second plunge-pool plan.
  • Cascades (Upper and Lower)Two Grade 4 walks from one sealed-road car park to a quieter swimming area than Florence or Wangi. Lower follows the creek (closes when water rises and in the wet for flood and crocodile risk). Upper climbs onto the Tabletop plateau for lookouts, then the pools. No camping. Sturdy shoes, sun and water are not optional.
  • Walker CreekSealed-road creek precinct: picnic and swim near the car park, a 1.2 km Grade 3 walk to Rocky Falls day-use, and a 3.5 km Grade 3 track along seven walk-in camps (furthest about 1.8 km) that also links toward Tabletop. Category B camping, book online. Respect occupied sites. A Tabletop start is a different booking.
