Things to do in Litchfield

Most first visits revolve around Florence Falls and the magnetic termite mounds, with Wangi or Buley as the picnic swim when signs say open. Overnight Tabletop and Lost City 4WD are a different sport. A booked tour does not override crocodile signs. Do not try to collect every track on a first visit.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, camping bookings and walking permits are never affiliated.

Day one rule

Pick one primary waterfall (usually Florence). Do not stack Wangi, Lost City and a late Darwin return onto the same hot afternoon.

Heat / croc bail-out

Shade, a lookout-only stop or staying in Batchelor beat a forced swim. Closed water stays closed. Bail-outs are competence.

4WD / Tabletop filter

High-clearance and a dry-season road report for Lost City / Reynolds. Tabletop only with live bookings. If the group has never packed in heat, stay on sealed roads.

  1. 1

    Florence Falls swim & lookout

First-visit icon · sealed · signed swim only

The usual first waterfall: escarpment lookout, then the 160-stair path or Shady Creek through monsoon forest. Swim only if signs say open. Do not do both the stairs and Shady Creek at peak heat unless everyone still has energy.

  2. 2

    Wangi Falls picnic plunge

Sealed · picnic · swim if signed open

Bigger pool, more picnic shade, café / kiosk when operating. Closes more often after rain or crocodile surveys. The 1.6 km loop has steep stairs. A last-year photo is not a permit.

  3. 3

    Buley Rockhole & Florence Creek

Grade 2 creek link · limited Buley parking

Cascading rock pools above Florence. Parking is tight — park at Florence and walk the creek if you can. Swim only in signed open water. Wet rock is how ankles go.

  4. 4

    Magnetic termite mounds

    Five-minute icon · sealed · no walk

Boardwalk through cathedral and magnetic mounds on the sealed road in. Five honest minutes. Do not spend the cool hour here if Florence is the point of the morning.

  5. 5

    Tolmer Falls lookout

Lookout only · no swim · Grade 3

Escarpment viewing platforms. No swimming. A cooler, quieter sealed-road stop when Florence and Wangi are full or closed.

  6. 6

    Lost City & 4WD country

    4WD · dry season · Lost City + Reynolds

Sandstone pillars and Reynolds Track waterholes (Tjaynera / Surprise Creek). High-clearance 4WD, typically dry season. Check roadreport. Not a sealed-road Darwin coach add-on.

  7. 7

Heritage — Blyth Homestead & Bamboo Creek

    Heritage · 4WD / southern access · verify open

Blyth Homestead ruins and the Bamboo Creek tin-mine remnants sit on the 4WD / southern side of the park. They are park-true history stops, not sealed-road icons. Confirm access and closures on NT Parks.

  8. 8

Quieter swimming — Cascades & Walker Creek

Quieter holes · signed swim only

Upper / Lower Cascades and Walker Creek are the usual quieter signed-swim options when Florence and Wangi are coach-busy. Still Be Crocwise. Walker has walk-in camps (official booking).

  9. 9

    Birding & monsoon-forest edges

    Early morning · formed tracks · heat-aware

Paperbark, monsoon forest and escarpment edges around Florence, Greenant Creek and Walker Creek are the practical birding hours — early, not midday. Stay on formed tracks. Do not invent species lists as guarantees.

  10. 10

    Tabletop Track

    Advanced · 2–4 days · walk fee + camps

Booked 39–46 km multi-day on the plateau. Walking fee plus camping. Usually June–September. Heat, limited water, limited signal. Not a first Litchfield weekend if you have never packed overnight in heat.
