Florence car park is full — do this, not Lost City

Best for: Peak dry-season mornings when Florence bays are already gone

When Florence Falls parking is full: lookout if you can reach it, then Plan B (the other sealed icon, Cascades or Walker) — not roadside vegetation and not a 4WD fantasy.

  • Full parking is a reverse-clock, not a prompt to invent roadside parking.
  • Plan B is the other sealed icon, Cascades or Walker — not Lost City in a 2WD.
  • Buley fills early; start at Florence even when Buley is the swim you want.

Don’t stack Florence and Wangi on a Darwin day

Best for: Fly-in visitors choosing one honest circuit from Darwin

Darwin to Litchfield is 90–120 minutes each way. One sealed circuit works. Florence stairs plus Wangi plus a late flight is how mixed groups fail in the heat.

  • 90–120 minutes Darwin to the icons is a day, not a suburb hop.
  • One pair: mounds + Florence + Buley, or mounds + Wangi.
  • A closed Wangi is not a prompt to add Lost City in a 2WD.

Be Crocwise at Litchfield: swim only where signed open

Best for: Anyone planning to swim at Florence, Wangi, Buley or a quieter pool

Crocodiles at Litchfield National Park — saltwater and freshwater, designated swimming only, Wangi fence upgrades after detections, and why last year’s photo is not a permit.

  • Swim only in currently designated open areas after ranger surveys — status changes.
  • Saltwater and freshwater crocodiles can both be present in this landscape.
  • Wangi has had deterrent-fence upgrades after detections. That is not a forever-open stamp.

NT Parks Visitor Pass and Litchfield fees: three systems

Best for: First-time bookers confused by “entry fee” and “Litchfield tickets” search results

Why there is no single Litchfield ticket — NT Parks Visitor Pass, camping categories and the Tabletop walk fee are three different checkouts. Published rates at last review 16 August 2026.

  • Interstate and overseas visitors need an NT Parks Visitor Pass; NT residents are exempt (proof may be requested).
  • Camping and the Tabletop overnight walk fee are never included in the pass. Three systems — never one combined headline figure.
  • Park camps book on parkbookings.nt.gov.au only. No pay-on-arrival.

Florence Falls vs Wangi Falls: which waterfall first

Best for: First-timers trying to fit “every waterfall” into one afternoon

How to pick Litchfield’s two sealed-road icons — 160 stairs versus the Wangi loop, crowds, the seasonal café [VERIFY], and why you should not stack both plus Lost City in one Darwin day.

  • Florence is the lookout-and-plunge-pool stop: 160 stairs down, or Shady Creek as the kinder Grade 3 alternative.
  • Wangi is the big twin-cascade loop (about 1.6 km, Grade 3) plus the park’s most watched swim when signed open.
  • If you only have one waterfall morning, pick one. Add Buley to Florence, or Greenant to Wangi — not both icons plus Lost City.

Dry season vs wet season at Litchfield

Best for: Choosing dates and deciding whether 4WD or Tabletop is even on the table

When to visit Litchfield National Park: May–September comfort, October–April heat and closures, 4WD and swim status, and why the main sealed road usually stays open.

  • Most comfortable: May–September (dry) — cooler nights, more reliable 4WD access and swimming surveys.
  • Wet and build-up (roughly October–April): heat, humidity, storms, more swim and 4WD closures.
  • The main sealed road via Batchelor usually stays open year-round — always check park-open and roadreport.

Litchfield from Darwin: day trip vs Batchelor overnight

Best for: Fly-in visitors and anyone booking beds before waterfall mornings

Litchfield is 90–120 minutes from Darwin on the sealed road — no public transport, no fuel in the park. How to choose a Darwin day trip versus a Batchelor night without turning the waterfalls into a car-park tour.

  • Plan 90–120 minutes Darwin to the icons, plus stops. Start early if you are returning the same day.
  • No regular public transport into the park — self-drive or a commercial Darwin tour.
  • No fuel in the park. Fuel in Batchelor or before you leave Darwin.

Tabletop Track planning: 39–46 km, fees, water and comms

Best for: People deciding whether to book — read the official track notes as well

A planning outline for Litchfield’s Tabletop Track — 39–46 km over 2–4 days, three fee systems, water, heat, limited signal and June–September season. Not a live permit.

  • About 39–46 km, 2–4 days, Grade 4 — [VERIFY] official notes for your dates.
  • Three fees: Visitor Pass (if required) + camping + overnight walk fee ($25 pp/night, cap $125 — [VERIFY]). Never one combined figure.
  • Carry all water. Some camps have limited or no water (Northern Campground is published as no water).
