Tabletop Track overview

2–4 walking days plus buffer nights

Best for: People deciding whether to book — this is not a live permit

A planning outline for the 39–46 km Tabletop circuit: three fee systems, water, heat, limited comms, whether to carry a PLB, and ways out via link tracks to Florence, Wangi and Walker. Book the official pass and camps first, then use this to sequence the walking days.

Do not walk this itinerary without live bookings and the official Tabletop notes. Distances, water, fire and open/closed status change. This page is not a permit.

Official planning figures are about 39–46 km over 2–4 days, Grade 4. Published sections include Florence–Wangi about 20 km (2 days), Wangi–Walker about 20.2 km (2 days) and Walker–Florence about 13.3 km (1–2 days). [VERIFY] every figure.

Three fee systems: NT Parks Visitor Pass if required; camping (usually Category B at track camps); overnight walk fee published at $25 per person per night, capped at $125. [VERIFY]. Never one combined headline figure.

Heat is the main medical risk. Some camps have limited or no water — Northern Campground is published as no water. Phone signal is officially limited. Carry Emergency+, tell someone your plan, and treat a PLB as a serious optional. Link tracks are the bail-outs.

Track status, swimming signs, fees and road closures change — verify on NT Parks and roadreport before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning outline only. A Visitor Pass is not a swim permit.

Timeline

  1. Months ahead

    Book the three systems

parkbookings: Visitor Pass if you are interstate or overseas; overnight walking-trail fee; each night’s designated camp. Peak June–September sells through, if not always “out”. Confirm the live walking-fee table (published $25 per person per night, cap $125 — [VERIFY]). This site never affiliates those checkouts. Usual season is June–September; fire and safety can close the track.

  2. Week before

Weigh the pack and the water plan

Train with the actual pack weight in heat. Write which camps have water and which do not. Print or offline every booking. Agree who holds the PLB, the map and the bail-out decision. Tell someone your camps and finish window. Screenshot park-open and fire notes on Wi-Fi.

  3. Arrival day

    Batchelor or a sealed-road camp

Fuel in Batchelor. There is no fuel in the park. Charge devices you will not charge again. Weigh the pack honestly. Buy last food in town. Sign-in / log-book discipline starts when the official notes say it starts — follow them. Visitor Pass already bought if required.

  4. Walking days

Link tracks, marked circuit, early starts

Join via signed link tracks from Florence Falls, Wangi Falls or Walker Creek (Greenant links appear on some sheets — [VERIFY]). Walk the marked route only. Start at first light. Rest in shade. Camp only at your booked designated site. Treat or boil water. Fuel-stove / fire rules as signed. Rock and cultural items: look, do not touch, do not invent stories. Traditional Owners are Koongurrukun, Mak Mak Marranunggu, Werat and Warray — this unofficial guide stops there.

  5. Water and heat hours

Carry it — do not assume the next pool

Limited or no water at some camps. Northern Campground is published as no water. 3 L+ carrying capacity is the planning minimum in heat. Headache, nausea, confusion or stopped sweating: stop, shade, fluids — not the next marker. Group of two or more is the sensible default.

  6. If it goes wrong

    Bail out on link tracks

Florence, Wangi and Walker day-use areas are the published exits. Do not invent a creek descent. Phone signal is limited; 000 needs reception; Emergency+ where you have a signal; ECDs are on the official map. A PLB is how you stop being invisible. Follow ranger advice if fire, flood or medical issues stop the week.

  7. Finish day

    Sealed road, then Batchelor

Come out a link track you already planned. Execute the pickup or car plan you made in week minus one — Litchfield has no reliable phone to renegotiate. Swim only where signed open at the day-use pool. Fuel and a meal in Batchelor. Do not add Lost City “because we still have the 4WD”.

Parking & access tips

  • Leave the start vehicle only where signed for overnight walkers. Do not take a day-use bay for four days.
  • Finish at a different link track only if someone can move the car legally and you planned the keys.
  • Batchelor is the last fuel and the last easy phone call.
  • Walker Creek walk-in camps are a different Category B booking — book the site you will actually use.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Unbooked start
  • Wet-season attempts
  • Treating this as a Darwin weekend add-on after a sealed day
  • Skipping a water carry because “there are pools”
  • Walking alone without telling anyone

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Experienced pack walkers in the June–September window
  • People who can book three fee systems without mixing them into one number
  • Groups who already know Florence, Wangi or Walker as bail-outs

Admin that is part of the walk

  • Visitor Pass if required — not a walking permit
  • Overnight walk fee + each night’s camp on parkbookings
  • A written water plan (Northern Campground: no water on published notes)
  • A human at home with your finish window — plus a PLB if you have one

Decision gates

  • If bookings are incomplete: you are not walking
  • If someone has not trained in heat: they stay in Batchelor
  • If the track is listed open but fire or water notes look ugly: read the official page, not a forum
  • If this page felt like a permit: it is not. Stop and use parkbookings.

What success looks like

  • Every night’s camp and the walk fee already sit on parkbookings before you leave town.
  • A written water plan that names the dry camp.
  • A human at home who knows the finish window — plus a PLB if you have one.

  • Tabletop TrackLitchfield’s multi-day circuit around the Tabletop Range: savanna woodland, monsoon-forest pockets, scenic pools, rough rocky ground and real heat. Access via link tracks from Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Walker Creek (some sheets also note Greenant). Book camping plus the overnight walk fee. Northern Campground has no water.
  • Florence Falls via Shady CreekThe signature Florence day walk: a 1 km monsoon-forest and woodland path along Shady Creek as the kinder way to the plunge pool. The short path is 160 stairs. Combine with the lookout, a signed-open swim, then Florence Creek Walk to Buley if energy and parking allow.
  • Wangi Falls LoopSignature short loop from the Wangi plunge pool through monsoon forest, a viewing platform at the base, then stairs to escarpment views above the falls. Pair with the park’s most accessible swim when signed open. Seasonal café [VERIFY]. Closures after rain or crocodile detections are normal, not rare.
  • Walker CreekSealed-road creek precinct: picnic and swim near the car park, a 1.2 km Grade 3 walk to Rocky Falls day-use, and a 3.5 km Grade 3 track along seven walk-in camps (furthest about 1.8 km) that also links toward Tabletop. Category B camping, book online. Respect occupied sites. A Tabletop start is a different booking.
