Cascades (Upper and Lower)
Area: Florence Falls & Buley Rockhole
Guide updated · Track conditions, fees, swimming status and closures change. Always veri…
Two Grade 4 walks from one sealed-road car park to a quieter swimming area than Florence or Wangi. Lower follows the creek (closes when water rises and in the wet for flood and crocodile risk). Upper climbs onto the Tabletop plateau for lookouts, then the pools. No camping. Sturdy shoes, sun and water are not optional.
- Grade 4 — moderate to difficult; rocky, steep, often full sun
- About 1.5 hours (Lower) or 2 hours (Upper)
- Lower 2.6 km return; Upper 3.3 km loop (dry) / 3.6 km return (wet)
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Walkers who want a quieter signed-open swim and will earn it on Grade 4 rock

Where you start
Cascades car park, Litchfield Park Road
Start at the signed Cascades car park on the sealed park road. Picnic tables and toilets sit by the car park. Both tracks go through rugged bushland — steep, slippery, uneven, rocky, often in full sun. Camping is not allowed. The swimming area is the point, not a roadside hole.
How to get there
- Sealed Litchfield Park Road from Batchelor. Visitor Pass if required. 2WD to the car park in normal conditions.
- Check park-open for Upper Cascades, Lower Cascades and the swimming area separately. Lower closes when water levels rise and in the wet.
- Park at Cascades. Do not assume Florence parking rules apply here. Fill bottles before you leave Florence or Batchelor if you are already low.
How to do it (step by step)
- Read today’s signs. If Lower is closed, that is a flood and crocodile call — take Upper only if you still want the walk, or leave.
- Lower (when open): 2.6 km return, about 1.5 hours, Grade 4. Quickest and shadiest walk to the swimming area, along the creek.
- Upper: 3.3 km loop in the dry or 3.6 km return in the wet, about 2 hours, Grade 4. Up onto the Tabletop plateau with lookouts over the lowlands. Exposed and hot.
- At the swimming area, spread out on the rock and use signed-open pools only. Official note: most of the area is full sun; some shade around the Curtain Falls plunge pool. Be Crocwise.
- Wear sturdy shoes. Carry water. Do not sit on grass at the car park. Return the way the signs allow. No overnight.
What to expect
Cascades is the sealed-road swim you walk for. Shallow pools, rock to spread out on, a curtain of water when flow allows, and fewer tour buses than Wangi. You pay for that with Grade 4 ground and sun.
It is not a secret. It is just further from the first car park people stop at. Bring the same Crocwise habits you brought to Florence.
Logistics
Sealed 2WD to the car park. Visitor Pass if required. Toilets and picnic tables. No camping. No kiosk. Lower and Upper are different tracks from the same node — read the sign that matches the walk you are about to start.

Extra tips
- This is where people who left Florence at 7 am go when Buley already looks like a bus stop.
- Grade 4 to a swim is still Grade 4. Mixed-ability groups should hear that before the car park.
- Lower in the dry is the usual “we want the pools” walk. Upper is the views-and-heat walk.
- No camping — Florence or Wangi bookings if you want a night.
Often paired with Florence Creek Walk— only if energy and weather allow.

FAQ — Cascades
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Which Cascades walk should I do?
Lower (2.6 km return, Grade 4) is the quickest, shadiest path to the pools when it is open. Upper (about 3.3–3.6 km, Grade 4) adds plateau lookouts and more heat. Lower closes in the wet. Verify on the official Cascades page.
Is Cascades quieter than Florence?
Official copy and visitor comments describe it as quieter and more tranquil than the big waterfalls. It is still a managed swim when signed open, still Grade 4 to reach, and still crocodile country. “Quieter” is not “empty” on a July weekend.
