Florence Falls via Shady Creek
Area: Florence Falls & Buley Rockhole
Guide updated · Track conditions, fees, swimming status and closures change. Always veri…
The signature Florence day walk: a 1 km monsoon-forest and woodland path along Shady Creek as the kinder way to the plunge pool. The short path is 160 stairs. Combine with the lookout, a signed-open swim, then Florence Creek Walk to Buley if energy and parking allow.
Do not pair: Do not pair Florence stairs + Wangi loop + Lost City on a Darwin return. Buley is the optional same-morning add-on — not Wangi, not Tabletop.
Turnaround: If the group is cooked at the lookout, the lookout still counts. Reverse. Do not invent a third descent on wet rock. Closed tape is not a prompt to try Wangi “quickly.”
- Starting the 160 stairs at 11 am after a long termite-mound linger — heat owns the climb out.
- Parking at Buley “for a minute” then walking to Florence against official limited-parking advice.
- Grade 3 — moderate; uneven cobble, steps, heat
- About 30 minutes one-way typical
- 1 km one-way (plus the 160-stair alternative)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: First Florence morning — swim when signed open, skip or add the 160 stairs
Distance, grade, time, swimming status, 4WD track status and open/closed status change — verify on official NT Parks Litchfield pages and parkbookings.nt.gov.au before you go.

Where you start
Florence Falls picnic area or the plunge pool
Start at the signed Florence Falls picnic area, or from the plunge pool if you already came down the stairs. Collect your bearings at the lookout first — it explains the two paths. This is sealed-road day-use country, not a 4WD walk. Buley Rockhole shares the same access road; parking is tighter there.
How to get there
- From Darwin: Stuart Highway south, turn off at Batchelor, then Litchfield Park Road. About 90–120 minutes depending on stops. No public transport. Last fuel in Batchelor (or Berry Springs / Darwin) — there is no bowser in the park.
- Buy an NT Parks Visitor Pass online before you leave Wi-Fi if you are an interstate or overseas visitor (parkbookings.nt.gov.au or 1300 281 121). NT residents are exempt; carry proof. The pass is not camping and not a Tabletop walk fee.
- Check the Darwin-region park-open page and roadreport.nt.gov.au (or 1800 246 199) the same morning. Cox Peninsula Road is an alternative with some unsealed sections.
- Park at Florence Falls. Use toilets, fill bottles, read swim signs. Do not leave valuables visible. Take water out of a closed car.
How to do it (step by step)
- Start early. Florence and Buley fill in dry-season peak and school holidays. Heat on the stairs and the cobble path is real by mid-morning.
- Walk to the lookout first if you have not seen the falls. Then choose: 160 stairs down, or Shady Creek (1 km one-way, about 30 minutes, Grade 3) through monsoon forest and open woodland on an uneven cobble path with some steps.
- Swim only if the plunge pool (and the creek above the falls, if that is your plan) is signed open after ranger surveys. Strong flow after rain needs caution. Be Crocwise. Last year’s photo is not a permit.
- Return the stairs, or walk Shady Creek the other way. Do not invent a third descent on wet rock.
- If the group still has legs and water, add Florence Creek Walk (3.2 km, Grade 2) toward Buley. Park stays at Florence — Buley parking is limited.
- Do not add Tabletop from here because the plunge pool felt easy. Tabletop is a booked multi-day walk.
What to expect
Florence is the postcard plunge: a high lookout, a twin-drop waterfall, and a pool you can swim in when rangers have surveyed and signed it open. Shady Creek is the walk people should have chosen before they counted 160 stairs in the heat. You get monsoon forest, open woodland and an uneven cobble path. It is still Grade 3. It is still a heat walk.
This is Koongurrukun, Mak Mak Marranunggu, Werat and Warray country. Walk on the signed paths. Do not invent cultural stories for a photo. The falls run year-round and are usually more spectacular in the wet and early dry — that does not mean the stairs, the creek walk or the swim are open on your date.
A competent first Florence hour is: lookout, one path to the pool, a signed-open swim or a look from the rock, then back. Adding Buley is optional. Adding Tabletop is a different trip.
Logistics
Sealed 2WD from Batchelor on Litchfield Park Road. Visitor Pass if you need one — buy on parkbookings.nt.gov.au before you lose Wi-Fi. Camping at Florence (2WD and 4WD campgrounds, Category A — [VERIFY]) is a separate online booking. You cannot pay on arrival. Campground hosts are often present in peak (May–September).
Three fee systems exist in this park and they never merge: (A) NT Parks Visitor Pass for interstate and overseas visitors; (B) camping on parkbookings; (C) Tabletop overnight walk fee. Florence day-use is pass-only if you need a pass. A camp tag is not a swim permit.
Toilets, showers, wood BBQs, an emergency call device and boil-before-drinking water sit at the precinct. Fill bottles here. There is no kiosk. Fuel was in Batchelor. Limited phone signal is the official planning note — do not count on 000 from the pool.
Day shape
Early: lookout, then Shady Creek or the stairs to the plunge pool while it is cooler and less crowded. Swim only if signed open. Mid-morning: either sit in shade at the picnic area, or walk Florence Creek toward Buley (3.2 km, Grade 2, about 1.5 hours) and swim at Buley if that water is signed open. Lunch is back at Florence shade — not on the grass (mites) and not in a closed car.
If you arrived from Darwin after 10 am in the build-up, the lookout plus a short path is enough. Cascades or Tolmer can wait. Wangi is further along the sealed road, not a “quick add” after a cooked Florence morning.
Bail-outs are honest here: stairs only, lookout only, or reverse Shady Creek. You are never far from the car park. That is why people stack too much afterwards. Stop while it still feels easy.
Hazards in plain language
Heat first. Then stairs and wet rock. Then crocodiles in any water that is not signed open. Be Crocwise applies to the whole park — saltwater and freshwater crocodiles are present. Rangers survey and trap before they open a hole. If the sign says closed, you look from the bank.
Strong flow after rain is how people get pinned on the rock. Supervise children at the deeper entry steps. Do not sit on grass (scrub typhus). Lock the vehicle. Carry water even on a “30-minute” path. Fires in the wider park (May–October) can close areas and spoil air — check SecureNT, not the picnic-table rumour.
Turnaround and reverse
Shady Creek works in either direction: picnic area to pool, or pool back to the picnic area after the stairs. If anyone is already cooked on the stairs, do not “just do the creek as well.” Reverse. The lookout is still a complete Florence visit.
Closed tape, a closed swim, or a storm is not a prompt to scramble around the escarpment. Return to the car. Check the park-open page. Choose Tolmer (viewing only) or the termite mounds if you still want a short stop on the sealed road.

Extra tips
- Shady Creek is the alternative to 160 stairs, not a secret extra waterfall.
- A lookout-only visit still counts if heat, crowds or a closed swim stop the rest.
- Boil any park water, or bring your own. Do not sit on grass or bare ground — scrub typhus mites.
- Pair with Buley the same morning only if you started early and will obey swim signs at both ends.
- Screenshot the official Florence page and the park-open page while you still have signal. Official guidance is limited phone coverage.
Often paired with Florence Creek Walk— only if energy and weather allow.

FAQ — Florence / Shady Creek
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Shady Creek easier than the 160 stairs?
It is longer and kinder on the knees, not flat. Official figures: 1 km one-way, about 30 minutes, Grade 3, uneven cobble and some steps. The stairs are the short path. Verify on the official Florence Falls page.
Can I swim at Florence Falls?
Only when swimming is signed open after ranger crocodile surveys. Status changes. Strong flow after rain needs caution. You can also swim in Florence Creek at the top of the falls when that water is managed as open. Be Crocwise. Never treat a closed tape as optional.
Should I park at Florence or Buley?
Park at Florence. Official advice for Florence Creek Walk is to leave the vehicle at Florence because parking at Buley is limited. Same access road; two different car parks.
Do I need a 4WD for Florence?
No for the main sealed precinct, lookout, stairs, Shady Creek and Florence Creek Walk. The Florence 4WD campground road is a separate steep sealed spur — not required for the day walk. Always check live road status.
