Park overview
Guide updated · verify live status with NT Parks
Litchfield National Park is Top End sandstone, monsoon forest and waterfall country about 90–120 minutes south-west of Darwin: a sealed spine of day-use icons (Florence, Wangi, Buley, magnetic termite mounds, Tolmer) plus 4WD edges (Lost City, Reynolds Track, Central Valley) and the Tabletop Track on the plateau. Most day visitors stay on the sealed road.
Always verify live conditions on the official NT Parks park page and the Darwin region park-open page. This site is independent and unofficial. It does not show live closures.
How to choose an area
Pick the precinct that matches the morning you actually have. Sealed icons and 4WD country are not one stop.
First visit · limited time
Florence Falls
Lookout, stairs or Shady Creek, optional Buley. Leave Wangi for another cool hour if heat is already winning.
Open Florence guide →
Picnic / plunge day
Wangi Falls
Bigger pool and picnic shade. Closes more often after rain or crocodile surveys. Café / kiosk when operating.
Open Wangi guide →
High-clearance · dry season
4WD country
Lost City, Reynolds Track, Central Valley (key). Do not add this to a first afternoon in a Darwin hire sedan.

Darwin fly-in · booking a bed
Batchelor gateway
Sleep and fuel in town, then one sealed morning. A 14-hour Darwin day plus Lost City is a poor first visit.

Five minutes on the way in
Magnetic termite mounds
Boardwalk icon. Do it in the cool, then leave. It is not a substitute for Florence.

Recommended order on any trip
- 1Decide sealed-road day, 4WD day or Tabletop — not all three.
- 2Buy the Visitor Pass if you need one (interstate / overseas).
- 3Check park-open, roads and swim signs the same morning.
- 4Fuel in Batchelor. There is no bowser inside the park.
- 5Complete one honest morning. Stop there if heat or energy says so.
- 6Add Wangi, Lost City or Tabletop only with time, vehicle and bookings.
Geography in plain English
Think of Litchfield as a sealed park road with waterfalls hanging off it, plus 4WD tracks that leave that road. Magnetic termite mounds sit near the entrance. Florence and Buley share a creek system. Wangi is further along the sealed spine. Lost City and Reynolds Track are high-clearance, typically dry season. Central Valley is a locked-gate camp after you collect a key. Tabletop walks the plateau above the day-use sites.
Batchelor is the sleep-and-fuel town. Darwin is a fly-in, about 90–120 minutes away — a base for flights, not for a casual same-day Florence + Wangi + Lost City loop. There is no regular public transport into the park. Park-managed camps are parkbookings only.
Quick comparison
Planning ranges only — verify roads, swim signs and bookings the morning you go.
| Area | Access note | Time on the ground | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florence Falls | Sealed Litchfield Park Road from Batchelor. Florence and Buley share a turn-off; park at Florence (Buley parking is limited). Check roadreport.nt.gov.au. | Half day for lookout + swim; full morning if you add Buley or Cascades | First visit, signed-open swimming, short walks, Category A camping |
| Wangi Falls | Continue on sealed Litchfield Park Road past the Florence turn-off. About 90–120 minutes from Darwin plus any earlier stops. Last fuel Batchelor. | 2–4 hours for loop + swim + picnic; overnight if you hold a Wangi camp booking | Accessible signed-open swimming, picnic lawn, short steep loop, Category A camping |
| Termite mounds | Sealed Litchfield Park Road shortly after entering from the Batchelor side. Easy 2WD. Often combined with Florence as stop one and stop two. | 20–40 minutes; not a half-day | A 20–40 minute orientation stop on the way to the falls |
| 4WD country | Lost City: ~10 km dirt off Litchfield Park Road between Buley and Tolmer. Reynolds Track: 4WD between Tolmer and Wangi, connecting south to Daly River Road. Central Valley: key after booking. Dry season only when open. | Half to full day per 4WD spur; 2–4 days for Tabletop; overnight for Central Valley | High-clearance 4WD, booked remote camps, Tabletop multi-day walkers |
| Batchelor | Darwin → Stuart Highway south → Batchelor → Litchfield Park Road. Alternative: Cox Peninsula Road (some unsealed). Southern 4WD: Daly River Road / Reynolds Track, dry season only when open. | One night before an early park morning; two nights if you want sealed icons plus a 4WD day | Fuel, food, Visitor Pass on Wi-Fi, overnight base, Darwin fly-in staging |
These are not one interchangeable area
- Florence and Wangi share a road, not a swimming sign.
- Lost City is 4WD country, not a sealed-road add-on.
- Visitor Pass ≠ camping ≠ Tabletop walk fee.
- Tabletop is not a Florence afternoon.
- Batchelor beds are not park camps. No fuel in the park.

Florence Falls & Buley Rockhole
Best for: First visit, signed-open swimming, short walks, Category A camping
The sealed-road plunge-pool precinct: Florence Falls lookout, 160 stairs or Shady Creek, Florence Creek Walk to Buley, plus Cascades and Walker Creek as quieter add-ons. About 90–120 minutes from Darwin via Batchelor. Swim only where signed open.

Wangi Falls
Best for: Accessible signed-open swimming, picnic lawn, short steep loop, Category A camping
The park’s most accessible plunge pool, a Grade 3 loop, a seasonal café [VERIFY], and the usual Darwin-tour magnet. Greenant Creek / Tjaetaba lookout is the quieter walking add-on. Closures after rain or crocodile detections are normal here, not a surprise.

Magnetic Termite Mounds
Best for: A 20–40 minute orientation stop on the way to the falls
The boardwalk on the black-soil plains: north–south magnetic mounds and nearby cathedral mounds. Usually the first stop after Batchelor on Litchfield Park Road. Short, hot, and not a picnic on the grass. Stay on the boardwalk.

4WD country (Lost City, Reynolds, Central Valley)
Best for: High-clearance 4WD, booked remote camps, Tabletop multi-day walkers
The dry-season other half of Litchfield: Lost City sandstone pillars, Reynolds Track to Tjaynera (Sandy Creek) and Surprise Creek, Blyth Homestead, and locked-gate Central Valley on the East Reynolds River. Tolmer Falls is the sealed-road viewing deck on the way. Tabletop is the multi-day walk that uses Florence, Wangi and Walker as link tracks.

Batchelor gateway
Best for: Fuel, food, Visitor Pass on Wi-Fi, overnight base, Darwin fly-in staging
The last-fuel, last-food, last-reliable-Wi-Fi town that makes Litchfield make sense: about 15–20 minutes to the park entrance, on the sealed road from the Stuart Highway. Darwin is the fly-in city, not a casual “we will just duck out for ice” base. Adelaide River and Berry Springs are the other stay names.

FAQ — picking an area
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Which area should I open first?
Florence Falls if this is your first visit. Wangi if you came for the picnic plunge (when signed open). Magnetic termite mounds if you only have five minutes on the way in. 4WD country only with a high-clearance vehicle and a dry-season road report. Batchelor if you are still choosing a bed and a bowser.
Can I treat Florence and Wangi as one stop?
They share the sealed spine, but they are not one waterfall. Florence is stairs, monsoon forest and the usual Buley add-on. Wangi is the bigger picnic site and closes more often after rain or crocodile surveys. Open both area guides only if you have the cool hours.
Is Batchelor inside the national park?
No. It is the sleep-and-fuel town. The park starts after the entrance on Litchfield Park Road. A Batchelor hotel does not include a camp site.
