Litchfield walks & lookouts

Start with a clear sealed-road vs 4WD vs Tabletop decision. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on the official walks page and the Darwin-region park-open page. Heat, crocodile surveys and wet-season flooding change what is open.

Decide before you lace up

  • Sealed morning: Florence lookout first. Add stairs or Shady Creek, then Buley or Wangi only if heat and energy allow.
  • Swim / picnic morning: Wangi Loop when signs say open — or Cascades / Walker Creek if the big pools are coach-busy.
  • Booked multi-day: Tabletop — walk fee, camps, usually June–September. Not a day-walk upgrade.

Doing Florence stairs, Wangi and Lost City on the same hot afternoon is how first visits fall apart. Pick the table row that matches energy, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Easy / shorter

Moderate

Florence / Shady Creek

moderate

The signature Florence day walk: a 1 km monsoon-forest and woodland path along Shady Creek as the kinder way to the plunge pool. The short path is 160 stairs. Combine with the lookout, a signed-open swim, then Florence Creek Walk to Buley if energy and parking allow.

Grade
Grade 3 — moderate; uneven cobble, steps, heat
Time
About 30 minutes one-way typical
Distance
1 km one-way (plus the 160-stair alternative)

Wangi Falls Loop

moderate

Signature short loop from the Wangi plunge pool through monsoon forest, a viewing platform at the base, then stairs to escarpment views above the falls. Pair with the park’s most accessible swim when signed open. Seasonal café [VERIFY]. Closures after rain or crocodile detections are normal, not rare.

Grade
Grade 3 — moderate; steep sections, stairs, heat
Time
About 1 hour typical
Distance
1.6 km return

Tolmer Falls

moderate

Viewing-only escarpment waterfall: a short sealed path to accessible viewing decks, plus a 1.6 km Grade 3 return through sandstone country and along Tolmer Creek. No swimming. No camping. Best flow in the wet. The right stop when Florence and Wangi are closed or you want height without stairs into a pool.

Grade
Grade 3 — moderate rim walk; also a 400 m accessible lookout path
Time
About 45 minutes typical for the rim walk
Distance
1.6 km return rim walk (plus a short sealed lookout path)

Greenant Creek

moderate

Shady Grade 3 walk from the Greenant Creek picnic area up to Tjaetaba Falls lookout. The plunge pool and downstream area is a sacred site — do not swim there. The tiny pool above the falls is not a signed swimming hole. No camping. Pair with Wangi, not with a second plunge-pool plan.

Grade
Grade 3 — moderate; steep in sections
Time
About 1.5 hours typical
Distance
2.7 km return

View guide →

Walker Creek

moderate

Sealed-road creek precinct: picnic and swim near the car park, a 1.2 km Grade 3 walk to Rocky Falls day-use, and a 3.5 km Grade 3 track along seven walk-in camps (furthest about 1.8 km) that also links toward Tabletop. Category B camping, book online. Respect occupied sites. A Tabletop start is a different booking.

Grade
Grade 3 — moderate creek walking; walk-in camps if booked
Time
About 30 minutes to Rocky Falls; about 1 hour for the creek track
Distance
Rocky Falls 1.2 km return; Walker Creek track 3.5 km return

Lost City

moderate

Weathered sandstone towers that read as ruined streets — dry-season 4WD only. Official access is a roughly 10 km dirt track off Litchfield Park Road between Buley Rockhole and Tolmer Falls. No facilities, no camping, no swimming. The track closes in the wet when it becomes impassable.

Grade
Short walk after a dry-season 4WD — no published grade; [VERIFY]
Time
Allow a half-day including the drive; walk is short
Distance
About 10 km 4WD access track plus a short walk among the pillars

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What is the best first walk in Litchfield?

Most first-timers start with Florence Falls — the lookout plus either the stair path or Shady Creek. Wangi Loop is the first walk if you came for the picnic pool. Tabletop is a booked multi-day walk, not something you add after lunch.

How hard is the Tabletop Track?

Published as about 39–46 km circuit, Grade 4, typically 2–4 days with a pack in heat. Walking fee plus camping. Usually June–September. Confirm live notes on the official park page.

Can I do Florence and Wangi walks the same day?

They share the sealed spine, so the driving is easy. The heat is not. A two-stop day works if you start at first light and treat midday as rest. Trying both plus Lost City is mostly a hot car.

Do I need a 4WD for these walks?

Not for Florence, Wangi, Tolmer, Greenant, Cascades or Walker Creek in normal conditions — sealed 2WD from Batchelor. Lost City and Reynolds Track need high-clearance 4WD. Always check roadreport.nt.gov.au.

Can I swim after a walk?

Only where signs say open after ranger crocodile surveys. Be Crocwise. Last year’s photo is not a permit.
