4WD day: Lost City and Reynolds Track

Full dry-season day in a high-clearance 4WD

Best for: Equipped 4WD groups who already understand the sealed icons

Lost City sandstone pillars plus Reynolds Track to Tjaynera (Sandy Creek) and/or Surprise Creek. High-clearance 4WD, water crossings, dry season only. Check roadreport. This is not a sealed-road add-on after Florence.

Lost City and Reynolds Track are why people bring a real 4WD to Litchfield. They are not a lunchtime detour from Wangi. High-clearance is recommended. Low-clearance SUVs and hire cars on “2WD/4WD auto” are how recovery stories start.

Typical shape: Lost City in the cool, then Reynolds Track toward Tjaynera Falls / Sandy Creek and Surprise Creek Falls if the track and crossings allow. Official park-open notes on 13 Sep 2026: Reynolds listed open as rough 4WD, water crossings about 500–600 mm. [VERIFY] the morning you go.

Dry season only (often from May/June). Wet-season attempts are how you meet a closed gate. Check roadreport.nt.gov.au and the Darwin-region park-open page the morning you go. Fuel in Batchelor. No fuel in the park.

Swimming at 4WD waterholes is still only where signs say open after ranger surveys. A high-clearance vehicle is not a ranger survey. Central Valley (Category D, key, locked gate) is a different booking — not a casual extra pad on this day.

Track status, swimming signs, fees and road closures change — verify on NT Parks and roadreport before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning outline only. A Visitor Pass is not a swim permit.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Roads, recovery, reverse clock

Confirm park-open and roadreport. Screenshot both. Agree: if crossings or the Lost City track are closed, you do not invent a line. Pack recovery gear you know how to use, 3 L+ water each, and a PLB or satellite messenger if you have one — signal is officially limited and worse off the sealed road. Fuel in Batchelor. Visitor Pass if required. Tjaynera camping is Category B 4WD (toilet and shower on the official Reynolds page) — only if you already hold a tag.

  2. Early

Sealed road to the 4WD turn

Do not “just quickly do Florence stairs first”. This day is the 4WD trip. Air down if that is how you drive this country. Tell someone the plan and a late-back time. Emergency Call Devices are on the official map — they are not a substitute for a check-in human.

  3. Morning

    Lost City

High-clearance 4WD access in the dry, then a short walk among weathered sandstone pillars. Stay on formed paths. This is not a scramble playground. Heat on the stone is real by mid-morning. If the track is closed, skip it — do not walk in “a little way” from the sign.

  4. Middle of the day

Reynolds Track — Tjaynera / Surprise Creek

Water crossings: walk them first if that is your rule; depths change. Official notes on 13 Sep 2026 listed about 500–600 mm. [VERIFY] live. Tjaynera (Sandy Creek Falls) is the usual 4WD swim-and-camp node when signed open (Category B). Surprise Creek is a further 4WD waterhole. Swim only where signed. Picnic shade. Do not clean fish at the edge.

  5. If Tjaynera is booked

Camp is the finish, not a third waterfall

Category B, book on parkbookings before arrival, display the tag. Toilet and shower on the official Reynolds listing — [VERIFY]. Boil water. Do not treat the day-use bay as overflow camping. If you do not hold a tag, you are leaving this precinct in daylight like everyone else.

  6. Afternoon

Back to bitumen before you fade

Leave time to recross in daylight. If a crossing has risen, wait or turn around — do not build a folklore line around the next car. Fuel and a meal in Batchelor. Darwin dusk wildlife is worse when you are already tired.

Parking & access tips

  • Park only in signed 4WD / day-use areas. Do not block tracks.
  • Central Valley is key-access Category D — not a free pad because you “came in 4WD”.
  • Tjaynera camping is booked on parkbookings before arrival. The day-use bay is not overflow.
  • Lock the vehicle. Theft is an official note, not a rumour.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Florence stairs “on the way”
  • Wangi plus Lost City plus Reynolds in one daylight window
  • Wet-season attempts
  • Central Valley without a key and a booking
  • Any crossing you have not walked or measured

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • High-clearance 4WD groups in the dry
  • People who already did the sealed icons on another day
  • Drivers who will actually turn around at a closed loop or a deep crossing

Track honesty

  • Lost City, Reynolds Track, Central Valley and some southern approaches are the 4WD set. High-clearance recommended.
  • Reynolds has water crossings. Depth varies. Loop tracks may close — return via the main track.
  • Southern access via Daly River Road is another dry-season 4WD conversation, not a wet-season backup.

Decision gates

  • If roadreport or park-open fails: sealed-road lookouts only, or stay in Batchelor
  • If a crossing is deeper than you trained for: turn around
  • If swim signs are closed: the falls still count from the bank
  • If anyone is already heat-sick at Lost City: skip Reynolds

What this plan is not

  • Not a sealed-road add-on after Florence stairs.
  • Not Central Valley without a Category D booking and a collected key.
  • Not a wet-season “we will see how far we get.”

What success looks like

  • Everyone back on bitumen in daylight with the same vehicle you started with.
  • One 4WD precinct done well — Lost City, or Reynolds, not both plus a sealed circuit.
  • A written note for next time: crossing depth, who faded, whether Tjaynera needs its own night.

  • The Lost CityWeathered sandstone towers that read as ruined streets — dry-season 4WD only. Official access is a roughly 10 km dirt track off Litchfield Park Road between Buley Rockhole and Tolmer Falls. No facilities, no camping, no swimming. The track closes in the wet when it becomes impassable.
