Florence Falls vs Wangi Falls: which waterfall first

How to pick Litchfield’s two sealed-road icons — 160 stairs versus the Wangi loop, crowds, the seasonal café [VERIFY], and why you should not stack both plus Lost City in one Darwin day.

Florence and Wangi are the two names on every Darwin day-tour brochure. They are both on the sealed road. They are both busy in the dry. They are not the same morning, and they are not interchangeable icons you collect after the termite mounds “if we have time”.

The usual honest sealed day is magnetic termite mounds plus Florence plus Buley — or mounds plus Wangi. Stacking Wangi, Florence and Lost City is how the day becomes a car park and a staircase argument.

This article is unofficial orientation. Live swim status, loop closures and café hours still come from NT Parks signs. The café is marked [VERIFY].

Florence: lookout, 160 stairs, Shady Creek

Florence is the postcard from above: twin streams into a circular pool, monsoon forest at the fringe. Most people stop at the lookout first. The direct path down is the 160-stair hit. Coming back up in 34 °C is the part brochures crop out.

Shady Creek (about 1 km one-way, 30 minutes, Grade 3) is the kinder formed alternative — uneven cobble, some steps, monsoon forest and woodland. Florence Creek Walk (about 3.2 km, Grade 2) links Florence to Buley along the creek. Park at Florence; Buley parking is limited.

Wangi: loop, large pool, busier precinct

Wangi is the large twin cascade and the park’s most social swim when signed open. The loop is published as about 1.6 km return, about an hour, Grade 3, with steep sections and a viewing platform. Start at the plunge-pool precinct. Track repairs sometimes force an out-and-back — [VERIFY] on the day.

This is also where fence upgrades after crocodile detections matter. A seasonal café/kiosk is often mentioned — [VERIFY]. Camping here is Category A and caravan-friendly, booked on parkbookings only.

Crowds and the reverse clock

Both precincts fill in the dry (May–September) and in school holidays. Termite mounds, Florence, Wangi and Buley share the same peak. Early is not a personality trait here — it is how you still get a park in the pool and shade on the stairs.

If you arrive from Darwin at 11 am, you will meet the heat and the coach groups together. That is a lookout-and-leave day, not a “we’ll do both falls and Lost City” day.

What to pair — and what not to stack

Florence pairs with the magnetic termite mounds (short boardwalk on the way in) and Buley Rockhole. Wangi pairs with Greenant Creek / Tjaetaba lookout if energy remains. Cascades and Walker Creek are the quieter sealed-adjacent options on a two-day trip.

Do not stack Wangi + Florence + Lost City. Lost City is a dry-season 4WD morning of its own. Reynolds Track is another day. Tabletop is a different week.

Swimming is not the tie-breaker you invent

Both pools are designated-only. If Florence is closed, you do not get a consolation scramble at Tolmer. If Wangi is closed, the loop or the lookout is still a visit. Read the Be Crocwise article before you pack bathers.

Buley’s ledges are slippery. Florence stairs are wet. Neither is a toddler free-range zone.

Side-by-side planning

Access: both sealed 2WD from Litchfield Park Road via Batchelor. No public transport. No fuel in the park.

Walk: Florence is stairs or Shady Creek plus optional creek walk to Buley. Wangi is a short steep loop from the car park.

Best first sealed day: mounds + Florence + Buley. Best second morning: Wangi + Greenant, or Cascades / Walker. Best Darwin day-trip if you will actually leave at dawn: pick one waterfall pair and go home.

Where this sits in a Litchfield plan

Print the one-day sealed itinerary if you are coming from Darwin. Print the two-day plan if you want both icons without a 14-hour day. Re-check park-open, roads and swim signs each morning.

Lost City and Tabletop are different trips. Do not sneak them onto this comparison.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Which waterfall should I do first?

Florence if you want the classic lookout-plus-plunge-pool and you can manage 160 stairs (or Shady Creek). Wangi if you want the big twin cascade, a shorter loop from the car park, and (when open) the large plunge pool. First-timers on a Darwin day usually do mounds then Florence then Buley.

Can I do Florence and Wangi in one day?

You can drive it. You should not also add Lost City, Reynolds Track or a late Darwin flight. Two waterfall precincts plus the termite mounds already fills a tight Darwin day. The two-day plan is the one that still has a walk in it.

How many stairs at Florence Falls?

The direct path is commonly cited as about 160 stairs to the plunge pool. Shady Creek (about 1 km one-way, Grade 3) is the monsoon-forest alternative. You still climb out. Carry water. Verify the live walks notes.

Is there a café at Wangi?

A seasonal café or kiosk is often reported at the Wangi day-use area. Hours change. [VERIFY] on the day. Do not leave lunch in Darwin because “there will be a café”.

Which is better for kids?

Wangi has the car park next to the precinct and a large pool when signed open — plus more people. Florence has the stairs (or Shady Creek) and pairs naturally with Buley’s rock pools. Neither is a playground. Heat and crocs still run the day.

Where should I camp if I want both?

Book Florence or Wangi Category A on parkbookings before you leave town, or sleep in Batchelor. Do not invent a walk-up site. The two-day itinerary on this site is the shape that works.
