Wangi Falls
Guide updated · verify live status with NT Parks
The park’s most accessible plunge pool, a Grade 3 loop, a seasonal café [VERIFY], and the usual Darwin-tour magnet. Greenant Creek / Tjaetaba lookout is the quieter walking add-on. Closures after rain or crocodile detections are normal here, not a surprise.
- Best for: Accessible signed-open swimming, picnic lawn, short steep loop, Category A camping
- Time: 2–4 hours for loop + swim + picnic; overnight if you hold a Wangi camp booking
- Continue on sealed Litchfield Park Road past the Florence turn-off. About 90–120 minutes from Darwin plus any earlier stops. Last fuel Batchelor.

Why Wangi is its own precinct
Wangi is the swim-and-lawn half of sealed-road Litchfield. The path to the water is paved. The pool is large and deep. The loop earns the escarpment view. Tours aim here. Locals still come. If you wanted empty rock, go to Cascades or a 4WD hole. If you wanted the iconic swim, this is it — when the sign says open.
It is the same Traditional Owner country as Florence. It is also the precinct that closes after crocodile detections and after heavy rain. Plan a picnic-and-lookout backup. Do not plan a workaround up the creek.
The pool, the loop and the café
When open, you can swim toward the falls. A handrail leads into water that deepens quickly. It is the most accessible swimming hole in the park. It is not safe at the top of the falls. Going beyond the guided path can put your life at risk.
The loop starts at the plunge pool: platform at the base, monsoon forest, stairs, stone-country views. 1.6 km return, about an hour, Grade 3, steep in sections. Repairs sometimes force a same-route return. Swimming above the falls is not allowed.
Official facilities list a café, coffee, food, free Wi-Fi and a phone. Treat hours as seasonal and [VERIFY]. Lunch from a bag still wins in peak queues.
Greenant Creek is not a second Wangi
Greenant is a 2.7 km return Grade 3 climb to Tjaetaba lookout. Shady creek, then steep. The plunge pool and downstream area is a sacred site — do not swim. The top is not monitored; official copy says swimming is not recommended. Picnic at the car park. No camping.
Some Tabletop sheets mention Greenant links. That is a map note for booked multi-day walkers, not a casual circuit from the picnic table.
Camping at Wangi
Category A, drive-in, all vehicle types including caravans on the official listing. Accessible toilets, change tables, showers. Hosts in peak May–September. Book parkbookings.nt.gov.au. No pay-on-arrival. [VERIFY] live sites and rates (published Category A $15 / $8 / $38).
A Wangi camp is not a Tabletop camp. Walkers starting the circuit from here still book the overnight walk fee and the plateau sites they will actually use.
When to come — and when to stay in the shade
Dry season is the usual swim window and the busy window. Arrive early in June–August and school holidays. Midday is hotter and fuller.
In the wet, flow is spectacular and the loop or the pool can close. If the park-open page looks ugly, Wangi can wait. A closed waterfall is still a waterfall you can visit next year.
Getting there — further along the same sealed road
You do not take a different highway. You continue on Litchfield Park Road past Florence, Lost City’s turn-off, Tolmer and Reynolds Track. Budget the extra minutes and the temptation to stop everywhere.
Sealed 2WD in normal conditions. No regular public transport. Fuel in Batchelor. Screenshot the map in town. Ranger contact (08) 8999 4555 is Palmerston head office.
Fees at this precinct
Visitor Pass if required — same park-wide pass as Florence. Camping is a separate Category A booking. Tabletop from Wangi is the third checkout (walk fee + camps). Do not merge them. This site never affiliates official fees or the café.

Full day from Darwin or Batchelor (a Darwin return is feasible but tight)
One day: sealed-road icons
One sealed-road day: leave Darwin at dawn (or wake in Batchelor), Visitor Pass already bought, magnetic termite mounds, then Florence Falls plus Buley Rockhole — or Wangi instead. Do not stack Wangi, Florence and Lost City.

Two days: sealed icons then Wangi country
Day 1 sealed icons (termite mounds, Florence, Buley) and overnight in Batchelor or an official park camp. Day 2 Wangi Falls plus Greenant Creek, or Cascades / Walker Creek if you want quieter water.

FAQ — Wangi Falls
Short planning answers. Official NT Parks signs and the park-open page always win over this guide.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Wangi always open for swimming?
No. Rangers open and close the pool after surveys, rain and crocodile detections. Check the official Wangi page and on-site signs the morning you go. Be Crocwise.
How hard is the loop?
Published as 1.6 km return, about one hour, Grade 3, steep in sections. The paved path to the water is the easy option. The loop is stairs and heat. Repairs may force a same-route return.
Is there food at Wangi?
Official facilities list a café, coffee and food. Treat it as seasonal and [VERIFY] on the day. Pack lunch anyway.
Can I add Florence the same day?
Yes if you start early and treat them as two stops, not four. Florence stairs first, Wangi swim second is the kinder heat order. Adding Buley, Cascades and Lost City as well is a car-park tour.

Florence Falls & Buley Rockhole
Best for: First visit, signed-open swimming, short walks, Category A camping
The sealed-road plunge-pool precinct: Florence Falls lookout, 160 stairs or Shady Creek, Florence Creek Walk to Buley, plus Cascades and Walker Creek as quieter add-ons. About 90–120 minutes from Darwin via Batchelor. Swim only where signed open.

Magnetic Termite Mounds
Best for: A 20–40 minute orientation stop on the way to the falls
The boardwalk on the black-soil plains: north–south magnetic mounds and nearby cathedral mounds. Usually the first stop after Batchelor on Litchfield Park Road. Short, hot, and not a picnic on the grass. Stay on the boardwalk.

4WD country (Lost City, Reynolds, Central Valley)
Best for: High-clearance 4WD, booked remote camps, Tabletop multi-day walkers
The dry-season other half of Litchfield: Lost City sandstone pillars, Reynolds Track to Tjaynera (Sandy Creek) and Surprise Creek, Blyth Homestead, and locked-gate Central Valley on the East Reynolds River. Tolmer Falls is the sealed-road viewing deck on the way. Tabletop is the multi-day walk that uses Florence, Wangi and Walker as link tracks.

Batchelor gateway
Best for: Fuel, food, Visitor Pass on Wi-Fi, overnight base, Darwin fly-in staging
The last-fuel, last-food, last-reliable-Wi-Fi town that makes Litchfield make sense: about 15–20 minutes to the park entrance, on the sealed road from the Stuart Highway. Darwin is the fly-in city, not a casual “we will just duck out for ice” base. Adelaide River and Berry Springs are the other stay names.
