Where you start
Florence Falls upstream picnic area, or Buley Rockhole
Official start is the upstream picnic area at Florence or the Buley Rockhole precinct. Leave the vehicle at Florence. Buley is a series of shallow and deep rockholes on the same access road, not a second waterfall with unlimited parking.
How to get there
- Same sealed access as Florence Falls: Darwin → Stuart Highway → Batchelor → Litchfield Park Road. Visitor Pass if required. Check park-open and roads the same morning.
- Park at Florence Falls. Walk to Buley and back, or arrange a very disciplined one-car shuffle only if you already know both car parks. Do not block Buley bays “for a minute.”
- Read swim signs at both ends before anyone changes into bathers. A Florence-open sign is not a Buley-open sign.
How to do it (step by step)
- Do Florence lookout and a signed-open plunge-pool swim first if that is the point of the morning — then walk the creek toward Buley.
- Follow the signed 3.2 km Florence Creek Walk. Grade 2 is not a licence to leave the path or sit on the grass.
- At Buley, swim only in signed open holes. They are a mix of shallow and deep. Supervise children. Wet rock is the usual ankle.
- Return the same way to the Florence car park unless you have a pre-agreed pickup. Do not hitch a ride plan on phone coverage.
- If heat or a closed hole stops you halfway, reverse. A partial creek walk is still a good hour.
What to expect
This is the connective tissue of the Florence precinct: woodland and creek-line walking between the big plunge pool and the rockhole staircase people queue for. Grade 2 means formed and reasonable, not shaded the whole way and not empty in July.
Buley is a family favourite when open — a string of holes, some shallow, some deep. It is also where unsupervised kids and wet rock meet. Treat it as a second swim stop, not a playground.
Logistics
One car, parked at Florence, is the official-friendly plan. Visitor Pass if required. No extra walking fee. Camping is a different checkout if you are staying at Florence overnight.
Toilets exist at both precincts. Fill water at Florence. Screenshot the map. Reception is not a plan.
Turnaround
Walk it as an out-and-back from Florence unless you have a pickup already standing at Buley. If the heat climbs or Buley is signed closed, reverse at any point. Do not push to the rockholes “because we already walked this far.”

Extra tips
- This is the walk that turns Florence into a half-day without inventing Tabletop.
- Carry water even though you plan to swim. Creek water is not a drinking plan unless you boil it.
- Peak dry-season Buley is busy. Early is quieter and cooler.
- Cascades is the quieter swim if Florence and Buley already feel like a car park.
Often paired with Florence / Shady Creek— only if energy and weather allow.
